Avenue Health Expands Harm Reduction Efforts with Safe Disposal Program for Opioid Prescriptions

Unused opioids left in medicine cabinets remain one of the leading sources of diversion, misuse, and accidental ingestion. At Avenue Health, we believe harm reduction doesn’t end at the counter—it continues at home.

To help patients and families safely dispose of leftover medications, Avenue Health will now offer DisposeRx® packets with every opioid prescription. This initiative allows patients to neutralize unused medications directly in their prescription bottles, preventing misuse and protecting households from harm.

DisposeRx® is an FDA-registered drug disposal solution that enables patients to safely deactivate medications in seconds. When mixed with warm water, the DisposeRx powder forms a biodegradable gel that renders pills nonretrievable and noningestible, allowing for safe disposal in household trash.

This effort aligns with Avenue Health’s mission to reduce opioid-related harm by ensuring every prescription—from dispensing to disposal—is managed with accountability and care. It also supports federal and state priorities for safe opioid stewardship and community protection.
